Wilson Choi's diving story

When I began diving a few years ago, I took up video to record my underwater journeys for a memory library on myself. In 1997, I went to Sangalaki and skin-dived to record the Mantas. Out of the blue distance there materialized the giant Mantas flapping their wings to block the sun, then another, an another, until near sixteen were milling about. My pulse quickened with the thought that I was no longer just an observer. I was among them - smacked in the middle of a wild melee. Both of us are not predators but why was I scared to death or they did so. I don't think I'll ever know the answer. The marine animals involved are almost universally shy. They want nothing to do with humans in their living territory.

Later on, I changed to shoot underwater photos. My main goals in my photographs are to capture every subject that offers the chance for a unique and beautiful image. The challenge is how to find it and freeze it on my film. We as human beings have the privilege of diving into the world that do not belong to us and experience the beauty of marine creatures.

The frustration of wrong camera settings or missed photos are all a part of the process. There might be other chances but may not be the same subject or environment. All I want to enjoy is just gently squeeze the shutter release and keep it all in a proper perspective to consider ourselves as a visitor to this unknown world with a pleasant encounter of all marine lives.
