Beluga Whales, Churchill, Canada

Photoed by Stephen Wong

Three Beluga Whales suddenly came from nowhere and ghostly appeared about 5 meters away from me. All of them were completely belly up, flippers spread out and tilting their heads, curiously observing the zodiac and me. They chirped, whistled and made clicking sounds indiscriminately...... I just could not help laughing out underwater at their comical gestures. In additional to their swivel neck thing, these Belugas can contort their mouth and lips and deliver "different facial expressions". This would be my first time seeing such a complex display amongst cetaceans.
