Karlson Wong's diving story

When speak of scuba diving, many may respond with fear for the mysteriousness of the deep blue sea. Due to the lack of knowledge and experience with the creatures beneath the surface, people tend to develop a false first impression for the harmless fishes in the sea. I have tried repeatedly to convince friends and lovers the peacefulness and joy of scuba diving-the excitement of breathing underwater and observing the relationships and habitats of such intriguing creatures.

I remember my first encounter with a shrimp goby at an eel garden in Bohol, Philippines. I was hovering slightly over the sandy bottom watching a family of garden eels dance in unison with the current, and suddenly noticed a small little fish just resting outside its hole motionless. A few seconds later, a pair of claws appeared from the dark hole behind, carefully pushing sand and small twigs in and out of the nest. I sat in the same position and observed for 15 to 20 minutes in awe and exhilaration. It felt as if I was in the front row seating of the making of a Discovery Channel show. It was the first instant when I fell in love with underwater.

Now with my start of underwater photography, apart for my personal enjoyment, I hope to utilize my prints as a tool to spread the beauty and serenity of the deep blue. In the end, I wish to change people's false perceptions of the mysterious ocean and the uninviting creatures that live within. PS. I would like to express my deepest gratitude to Raymond, and Alex for throwing me in the water with a camera, and Sai Wong for your encouragements and helpful pointers.
